Basic Petroleum Technology - BPT
Basic Reservoir Engineering - BR
Basic Geophysics - BGP
Basic Petroleum Geology - BG
Duration: 5 days
Instructor(s): Bryan Cronin, John Dillon, Jeffrey (Jeff) Lelek, Larry Lens, Larry Moyer, John Pigott
What is Basic Petroleum Geology? For all practical purposes it closely resembles the freshman level course that a non-science major at a university would take to satisfy the science requirement. Presentation is oriented toward topics of interest to the petroleum industry. While high school chemistry and physics might help in understanding a very few selected topics, the course is designed for those with no technical training (and those who studiously avoided science in school). Primary objectives of the course are to broaden your geological vocabulary, explain selected geological principles and processes, and describe how certain petroleum reservoirs and source rocks are formed.
Petroleum industry personnel in need of basic geological training, including engineering, geophysical, technical support, and administrative personnel.
You Will Learn:
DR. BRYAN CRONIN is a geologist with 26 years of technical experience with deep-water clastics (turbidites) at outcrop, on the sea floor and in the subsurface as hydrocarbon reservoirs. He also works on other clastic sandstone reservoirs such as shallow marine and deltaic. He has been involved in education and training for over two decades with postgraduate (MSc and PhD) students, oil company employees, and other industry professionals. Professor Cronin has run reservoir field courses for many years for industry (Specialist Geology/Geophysics; Foundation for Engineers; Asset Team Integration Courses and Team-building events) in the Alps, Pyrenees, western California, Western Ireland, SE Spain, eastern and southern Turkey. He also runs a series of 1-, 2-day and week-long technical short courses for industry. From 2005, he became an independent consultant, working on deep-water reservoirs in the North Sea, West Africa and beyond. He is an Honorary Professor in four Universities: University of Aberdeen; Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen; Firat (Euphrates) University in eastern Turkey; and PetroChina Institute of Petroleum Geology in Hangzhou, China. He also runs industry courses at home and overseas for companies such as PDVSA, PetroChina and SONATRACH. He is actively involved in Exploration and Production geological consultancy, from peer-assist consultancy, data room visits, core description and interpretation projects, seismic interpretation, workshops, field courses, etc., in a wide variety of global areas. Professor Cronin was awarded the William Smith Fund by the Geological Society, London, in 2007 as part of the society's bicentenary celebrations. This prestigious award was due to his work on interaction between academia and the oil and gas industry, as well as his international standing in his fields of research into deepwater sedimentary systems and reservoirs. Professor Cronin has a PhD from the University of Wales, Cardiff. He studied the architecture of channels in deep-water systems: variability, quantification and applications. He also has an MSc from the National University of Ireland, Dublin (Petroleum Geology), and a BSc from the National University of Ireland, Cork.
MR. JOHN F. DILLON has over 30 years of industry experience working for major companies such as ConocoPhillips and BP, as well as consulting experience in geoscience, organizational excellence and staff development. He has worked the entire exploration-development disposal chain, from early basin analysis, through development, to end of field life farm-outs. His experience has spanned a wide range of play types, rock types, and environments of deposition and his development experience has taken him to the North Sea, Dubai, West Coast Africa, and Alaska. His exploration efforts have been in Angola, Congo, Libya, Niger, and the Western US. He brings experience to the room beyond the science itself, including the management of personnel associated with the science, project development from conception through to high level approval, as well as years of experience in how can we get things done and why is this important. He has been deeply involved with the creation and refinement of learning and staff development programs since 1990. He received a BS from Marietta College, and an MS from the University of New Mexico.
MR. JEFFREY (JEFF) LELEK has over 33 years' petroleum industry experience with Amoco, BP, and TNK-BP. Starting as a geologist in Denver, he has worked and/or managed exploration - appraisal - field development - production stage projects, as well as business development, strategy, commercial, and organizational capability areas. After working in most western US basins, Middle East New Venture access, and Amoco's corporate headquarters, he was Exploration Manager in Cairo responsible for building the Nile Delta effort, Gas Asset Manager in Canada, Developments Manager in Australia focused on LNG exports, and Exploration Manager in the North Sea. The latter part of his big company career involved discipline management, including people strategy, competency definition and development, global resource allocation, and hiring. His last position was Technical Capability Director for TNK-BP in Moscow. Jeff has a BA in geology from Dartmouth College, an MS in geology from the University of Montana, and an MBA.
MR. LARRY F. LENS has over 33 years' experience in the petroleum industry working for Amoco and BP. Starting as a working Geologist in the Texas Gulf Coast and West Texas regions, he later expanded into the international arena working in Gabon and Congo after which he became Amoco's Regional Geologist for Africa and the Middle East. He was Amoco's Country Manager in Ghana in the late 1980's, Consulting Geologist in New Orleans, and then Chief Geologist for Amoco's Worldwide Exploration Group. Larry later transferred to Denver to build a new exploration team supporting Amoco's North American gas strategy and later returned to the international arena working in Angola. After Angola, Larry became the Technical Learning and Development Manager for the BP E&P group globally. He began work on the Training and Education strategy which was a part of BP's commitment to gain entry into Libya. He worked in Tripoli, Libya with a dual focus on BP's Training & Education commitment to the National Oil Corporation of Libya as well as the internal focus on training and development within BP. After retiring from BP in late 2009, Mr. Lens took on a leading role in developing the PetroSkills Accelerated Development Programs across all of the E&P Disciplines, having seen this as a need in the Oil and Gas Industry. He has an MS degree from the University of Georgia and a BS degree from the University of Michigan both in Geology.
MR. LARRY R. MOYER has over 30 years' experience in all facets of the exploration, land and production phases of the oil and gas industry. He has extensive experience developing integrated geological, geophysical and engineering interpretations for use in exploration, field development and producing property evaluation, including geological and geophysical field and well-site supervision. He also has experience with coal, oil shale and hydrology projects. He has experience with all aspects of managing operated and non-operated oil and gas properties with emphasis in accounting, Joint Operating Agreements, oil and gas sales contracts/marketing, AFE's, revenue audits, gas balancing audits, permitting, and filing of regulatory reports. He has successfully sold prospects to both industry and non-industry partners to fund drilling wells and producing property acquisitions. He received a BA in accounting from Western State College, and a MS in Geology from University of Colorado.
DR. JOHN D. PIGOTT is an internationally recognized energy expert with more than 25 years' experience in worldwide hydrocarbon exploration-exploitation. He has been an Advisor to Foreign Energy Ministries, an Exploration Consultation for Oil Companies Worldwide, and a University Professor. He has worked in many different areas including concession design, corporate management evaluation and reorganization, regulator advisement and technical advisement. He integrated geological and geophysical data into predictive, comprehensive basin models for hydrocarbon exploration on 5 continents. He designed and implemented geologically targeted 2D-3D seismic acquisition, processing, and interpretation for field development in South East Asia, North Sea, Central America, and the Gulf Coast. He received a BS in Geology, a BA in Zoology (cum laude) and an MA in Geology from The University of Texas and a PhD in Geology from Northwestern University.
